Introduction

Narcolepsy is a neurological condition that results in sudden sleep attacks during the daytime. It can result is intense sleepiness at inappropriate times like driving, talking, walking and while at work, potentially causing physical harm to the individual and to people around. The cause is often unknown. The most common age group is in the 10-30 years old.

Common Symptoms Due to Narcolepsy:

  • Severe excessive sleepiness
  • Poor sleep at night
  • Sudden muscle weakness (cataplexy)
  • Hallucinations

Diagnosis and Treatment of Narcolepsy

A thorough clinical and a sleep history is important. An overnight sleep study followed by a special daytime sleep study call the MSLT (Multiple Sleep Onset Latency Test) is needed to study the condition. Although there is no cure for narcolepsy, there are many treatment options available to help control the symptoms. These interventions include medications and behavioral modifications. We have over 25 years of experience in treating sleep disorders in adults, and we will work with you to diagnose your condition and plan a treatment that helps you sleep and feel better. Based on your condition and our evaluation, we will recommend prescriptions, and behavioral therapy that help you manage your symptoms.
